When working with Next.js and some other JavaScript projects, where a process needs to be started on a given port, sometimes, after closing your terminal the active process remains running.

As a result, when  you run a start command targeting the same port (eg 

), the launch fails with an error similar to this:

To solve this, first, make sure that you have actually closed all terminal windows/tabs that may be running an instance of a project on that port (for example minimized window of a terminal or you IDE like VS Code with a built-in terminal).

If you have, and still are facing this error, the fix is simple and consists of two commands:

This command lists all the processes running on port 

. I ran it and i had multiple processes on it, and you may have too. For me the below was the output:

So from the above output we would take the 

Note that if you have multiple processes running, you will likely need to pick the one with the command 

 (unless, of course, you know what you are doing and are going for something else, in which case, you would pick the PID that suits your target).
